The Literacy Umbrella:  Reading and writing are the stem of the umbrella opening it to a world of wonder and knowledge

Literacy can be defined as the process in which the reader and writer transact with text to construct meaning or create new text for the purpose of communicating with others. In its simplest form, literacy means helping students to become independent readers and writers so that they can use these processes to learn about themselves and the world around them and to communicate with others. The analogy of the Literacy Umbrella serves as an icon to capture this meaning. Reading , and writing can be compared to the stem of the umbrella. The stem is used to open the umbrella. Reading and writing help children to open the umbrella to the multiple literacies--mathematics, social studies, science, art, music, physical education, etc. Reading and writing also give children an access card to the information age and the world of technology. Without this card, they cannot enter.

The Stratford Public Schools has major goals of helping every child become an independent reader and writer by the end of third grade, a more sophisticated reader and writer by the end of sixth grade, and a successful middle school and high school student. The focus is on teaching reading and writing in grades K-6, and on using reading and writing to learn as children progress through the grades.

The Literacy Umbrella represents these goals. It serves as a symbol to rally the entire Stratford Community - teachers, school administrators, parents, children and members of the general and business community to provide support in achieving these goals. To be successful, the Stratford Public Schools seeks to tap the collective wisdom and energies of all major constituents and to channel them in a common direction. This curriculum booklet represents the desire of the Stratford Public Schools to reach out to parents and the general community, and to enlist everyone in the task of helping Stratford's children to become life long readers, writers, thinkers and learners.
