This is always a super busy time of the year in schools, and probably for all of you at home also. We have had a smooth start to the year with a number of new families moving in and all of us adjusting to new friends and new learning. We welcome all of our new families and hope that you are experiencing our Stratford hospitality. It is not easy to adjust anytime you make a move, but many of our new families are coming from out of state and out of country. So we recognize how difficult this move might be. Since all of us in this district want your children to be successful, please let us know how to assist with your transitions.
As we are dedicated to doing the best for our students, we have embarked upon our Strategic Planning process for a new 5 year plan. This plan should be the guide for important decisions the district must make for the next 5 years, while still allowing flexibility for unexpected events. After all, no one can really predict the impact the emerging technologies might have.
Stakeholders, including students, representing our community volunteered their time this past weekend to meet Friday night and all day Saturday to begin the work of the Strategic Plan. We will meet again in January, after which several action teams will work on building out the actions to meet our goals. A meeting at the end of May, or the beginning of June, is when we will finalize our plans and take them to the Board of Education for approval. We expect to be accountable for the goals that are set and will report our status to the Board of Education on a regular basis. You will be able to see our Strategic Plan after it is finalized on our website. We welcome your comments.
Welcome to the start of the 2016-2017 school year. The teachers have planned an exciting curriculum for fifth grade and I am certain that your children are already comfortable in their classrooms and making friends. As we said in our August notification, we are busy reconfirming the residency of all our students this year, beginning with the fifth grade. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you, but we want to be able to assure our Stratford community is supporting verified Stratford students. A special thank you to those who have assisted us already by providing the necessary documents. If you have not re-verified your residency, at this point in time, please do so by October 31, 2016.
Janet M. Robinson Ph.D. / Superintendent of Schools
This is that wonderfully exciting time of the year when parents are doing their back to school shopping with their children and maybe doing a happy dance or two, since school begins next week. I see teachers in their classrooms preparing bulletin boards and welcoming messages for their new students. The schools absolutely gleam from the scrubbing and waxing our hard working custodians have done throughout the hot summer. Preparations for the 2016-17 school year are almost complete.
We look forward to seeing our students next Thursday for their first day of this new year. We hope they are as excited as we are.
This year there will be 8 early release days for teachers to meet collaboratively and share ideas on innovative instruction. This is a key piece in our plan for continuous improvement. We are all dedicated to building a Culture of Thinking in the Stratford Schools that inspires our students not only be engaged learners but to also think innovatively and creatively. We are seeing the improvement in student achievement and that is happening by doing it the "right way". That is, we are not teaching to the test, but rather working to improve our curriculum and instruction. Our goal of having best practices in every classroom has motivated all our educators to provide every student with the best instruction for their success.
To complement our improvement efforts, we are about to embark upon the new Strategic Planning process where our community comes together to update and refine what the future graduate of Bunnell and/or Stratford High School must have for their success. We are asking a variety of stakeholders within Stratford to join us in this very important endeavor. The goals developed during this process will guide the priority work of the district for the next 5 years.
This is a very positive start to the new school year and we wish all of our students a successful learning school year!
As follow up to my last letter regarding the online verification of residency, we are beginning with Grade 5 students (families) for the upcoming 2016-2017 school year. We hope you won’t be inconvenienced by this process as we are making every effort in keeping the flow as smooth as we possibly can.
We ask that you continue in your support of helping our district move this process along in a smooth and positive manner. We truly appreciate all of you, and our district’s mission remains to ensure that all of our Stratford students receive the best possible education with teachers who are focused on meeting their needs. Students who might be from other districts need to be educated in their home district whose mission is to educate them. We will do all that we can to work successfully with our students, just as other districts are committed to working with their students.
This project launches as part of our new online registration process and use of technology. At the same time, it helps us to fulfill our obligation to the taxpayers / residents of Stratford who support the district’s operating budget, while ensuring our budget dollars are being spent for Stratford students. As I stated earlier, at this point in time, this step of the residence verification process involves fifth grade families only. Student families are asked to submit two (2) current utility bills (in your name). The following utility bills will be accepted:
Utilities – Gas, Electric, Oil, Water
Phone / Cell Phone
Cable TV Provider
