Greetings, Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year at Bunnell High School! Attached you will find the Opening Newsletter which provides you with important information, updates, events, policies, rules, and expectations that guide our work at BHS and support your children’s success. Please set aside some time to thoroughly read and review the entire newsletter and talk with your son or daughter in preparation for the start of the new school year. Conversation with your student prior to August 29th will support his/her goal-setting and commitment to having his/her best school year yet.
We begin this school year celebrating many significant successes which affirm the hard work and achievement of students, staff, and families over the course of the last several years as we have emphasized high-quality instruction for teachers; expanded Advanced Placement (AP) courses, AP student enrollment, and the number of AP tests our students take; established College Board accounts for 95% of all students in grades 9-12 with a link to Khan Academy; and expanded home-school communication and participation via multiple social media platforms and committee opportunities for parents (PTSA, Bulldog Club, Post Prom, Climate Committee, Senior Internship Facilitation, Career Day, field trip participation, and guest speakers) . Bunnell High School is, indeed, an exceptional school, and it’s important to celebrate our excellence.
To begin, the rising senior class, the Class of 2020, attained a +20 point mean (average) score on the 2019 School Day SAT in comparison with the BHS Class of 2019. Secondly, Bunnell, for the first time in school history, has been recognized by U.S. News and World Report among the Best High Schools in the U.S. for 2019, bestowing “elite status in what [they] believe to be the most holistic and comprehensive evaluation of U.S. high public high schools ever published.” Only the top 40% of high schools in the country are recognized each year with such status.
And, lastly, we most-recently learned that Bunnell High School is one of just 12 schools statewide to receive National and State recognition as a PTSA School of Excellence for 2019-2021. Please join me in thanking Mrs. Beverly Blackwell, former Bunnell PTSA President, Mrs. Kristin Lupo, current Bunnell PTSA President, and Mrs. Jennifer Fallotico, current Connecticut PTSA President, for their dedication to our school association over the past four years and their tireless efforts to support home-school relationships in partnership with our administrative leadership team and staff. Thus, I encourage all of you to continue to get involved in all of the amazing opportunities that await you and your child this coming year! Please find a way to join one of our many parent organizations; sign up as a volunteer for your student’s club events; or attend the school play, school concert, or a sporting event.
This year, in keeping with the District 5-Year Strategic Plan, all Stratford Public Schools will emphasize and implement Social-Emotional Learning protocols among all students and staff. Every school has been provided with an e-learning platform that hosts developmentally aligned, evidence-based exercises for building and practicing grade level specific Social and Emotional learning skills. These exercises will be implemented daily (2x/day at the high school) via short (3-5 minute) videos and build sequentially throughout the year, equipping students and teachers with the ability to identify, express, and manage their emotions and stress productively. We, at Bunnell, are eager to offer this program, entitled “Move This World,” to parallel and complement our continuous emphasis upon academic rigor and student achievement.
Lastly, I would like to acknowledge the efforts of our building custodial crew, under the leadership of Mr. Brian Maslar, as well as the efforts of our summer secretarial team, under the direction of Mrs. Pattie Darragh, who have worked all summer to ensure that our school is ready in every way to welcome back our students for the 2019-2020 school year. If you have an opportunity to share your own appreciation with them, I encourage you to do so!I want to thank each of you, Parents and Guardians, for your dedication to Bunnell High School, for your support of our staff, and for your partnership that guides every one of our students toward success.
I look forward to welcoming you personally at our Open House on September 11th, at 6:30 pm. Together, let’s have an exceptional year!
Nancy C. Dowling, Ed.D.Principal
