National External Diploma Program (NEDP)
The National External Diploma Program (NEDP) is a nationally - and State-recognized high school completion program for adults who: Are motivated; Are self-directed; Are practical; Want recognition for life skills; Have job skills; Want flexible scheduling; Want to work at home.
There are two phases to the National External Diploma Program, the Diagnostic Phase and the Assessment Phase. During the Diagnostic Phase an NEDP advisor evaluates the participant's basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics, and completes a survey of prior life experiences. Once the requirements of the Diagnostic Phase are met, the Assessment Phase begins. A trained NEDP assessor determines whether the participant can demonstrate writing, speaking, mathematics, problem-solving, reading, and critical thinking academic skills through the performance of real-life tasks. The Assessment Phase also requires that the participant satisfy an individualized competency in one of the following: Occupational/Vocational Competencies; Specialized Competencies; Advanced Academic Competency. Completing the program takes an average of six months. Skill level at entrance and the amount of time a person can devote to the program determine the length of time required.
